Do honeysuckle and trumpet vines need to be pruned and when?

[October 2003] Answer Honeysuckle vines do not have to be pruned unless you wish to control or shape the growth. Since next year’s blooms will appear on this year’s growth the best time to prune is immediately after flowering is finished. Trumpet vines are very aggressive and need to be kept under control by pruning or they will take over the garden. The blooms appear on new growth so they can be safely pruned in the early spring or later in the year after blooming has occurred. Mature trumpet vines can get very heavy so you may need to add more support or it could collapse your fence. It also sends out profuse suckers underground so you will need to remove them as they appear so your garden will not be overrun.
