Do honeybell orange trees have thorns?

Answer Hi Sharon, Oh I am sure you have a Honeybell, what your husband cut off, was a sucker from the “rootstock” which is a “Sour Orange” (another variety of Citrus that bears fruit that tastes like a Lemon), the rootstock is chosen for its resilience against disease and other problems, and the Honeybell is grafted onto it. Just keep the suckers in check and it will be fine. Look at the bottom of your tree and you will see an area just above the soil that is fatter then the rest of the tree, this is the grafted area, the sucker developed from below that area, where the tree becomes Sour Orange, above that area is the Honeybell and that will be what develops fruit for you eventually.
