Do Health care Workers need to have the H1 N1 influenza vaccine?
Health care workers are a high priority to receive because immunization will protect both them and patients. There are many scientific studies that show healthcare workers can pass on influenza to their patients. Influenza can be contagious at least a day before a person feels any symptoms or feels sick. Vaccination reduces the potential of our employees developing influenza infection and giving influenza to others. Also, influenza illness has an effect on attendance and staffing our services. New York State has recently passed a regulation for healthcare that requires health care workers to be vaccinated for both seasonal influenza viruses and the H1 N1 influenza virus. Employee Health Services will have vaccines available for employees, medical staff, volunteers and students working at our facilities. We will begin with the seasonal Flu vaccines this month and the H1 N1 flu vaccine when it arrives soon.
