DO HEAD START CHILDREN RECEIVE MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE?
YES! Medical examinations are a very important part of Head Start. A child who is in poor health will function at a level considerably lower than that of a well child. Poverty and poor health frequently go hand in hand. Children’s examinations often reveal anemia, visual, hearing or dental deficiencies, or other problems needing medical attention. Many have never had a medical examination and are without a record of immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, small pox, polio, or measles. For many children, this is the first time they have ever seen a doctor, dentist or nurse. Careful attention is given to follow-up on any medical and dental problems which are found. In addition, children are seen by the doctor if they become ill while in the Head Start program. Mental Health referrals are made by the Health Coordinator.
