Do Ground Hog Climb Trees?”
Recently Beu Bell, a conservation minded Fayette resident handed me a photo of a ground hog climbing a tree in his back yard. Neither of us had ever seen a ground hog climb a tree, but after a little research I found that ground hogs despite their heavy-bodied appearance ground hogs can climb to escape predators or survey their surroundings, however they prefer to retreat to their burrows when threatened. Mostly herbivorous, groundhogs primarily eat wild grasses and other vegetation, and berries and agricultural crops when available. Groundhogs also eat grubs, grasshoppers, insects, snails and other small animals, but are not as omnivorous as many other sciurids.
