Do good looking people have an easier life?
They may have an easier life — due to mistaken perception. Good looks all too often are “in the eye of the beholder”, and they often “misjudge a book by its cover”, failing to uncover the hidden talent and personality inside. The perfect example, of course, was the 47-year-old Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who had been somewhat ridiculed for her looks since childhood, and when she walked on stage to sniggers before singing in the British talent show heat, a few weeks back. But then she opened her mouth to sing and belted out “I’ve Got a Dream” and got standing ovations during and at the close of her performance. She went on to come 2nd in the final, was watched some 200-million times on YouTube, and has a multi-million-dollar contract in the works. Society conditions us to focus on our own appearance and seduces us to be fascinated by “beautiful people” and to strive to imitate or look up to idolized and/or idealized beauty. But what is beauty, without talent and personality? Give me t
