Do good books necessarily make good films?
Interesting question. I would have said a few years ago that they did. But that was when a good book was then turned in to a good film using a good budget. I feel that these days a good book is turned into a film ONLY as a vehicle to sell the associated merchandise. Most films have made their money before they are even released by way of merchandising agreements and the actors doing their promotional rounds. The DVD market is protected by code locking the regions of the globe so that the merchandising machine has a fresh go in successive regions. Even if the film has flopped badly in prior regions. In some cases the film has become just another way of promoting the promotions that promote the promotions! Q. Does a good filmmaker have to be a good writer and storyteller? Absolutely. As I said earlier, film is the medium, telling a good yarn is the reason. Remember though, the yarn must be interesting and the listener (or the viewer) has to be interested enough to listen.
