Do godparents actually play a role these days?

I am a godparent and it took a lot of soul searching to agree to it. The reason I agreed was because I wanted to play a part in the Children’s lives and offer them an additional “family member” who will look out for them as they grow up. I was really honoured to be asked and do my best to be part of their lives. I Visit the children at least once each week, sometimes more. I feel very much a part of the family and go on family outings with them, spend birthdays, Christmas and Easter with them. I think a lot of godparents are very distant in the lives of their godchildren, but I’m not one of those.

Good point. It often seems to be an honorary title these days, especially if the parents and or godparents aren’t religious. I think godparents should take a special interest in the welfare of their godchildren, though, even if only with regard to temporal matters.

They do not play the role they are supposed to play. I think it is more about taking care of the kids if something were to happen to the parents which is not supposed to be their role and it wont be even if something did happen because of legalities.
