GSDs have been known to suffer from hip dysplasia and back problems (due to their sloping backs). To limit the chances of having an unhealthy dog, seek out a respected breeder. The parents should both have been hip and elbow scored and had any other necessary health checks to ensure their pups are given the best chance. Equally you could rescue a dog. In either case, you have to return the defective dog to the breeder. That could be heart breaking, but if you are planning on having a GSD for search and rescue, detection, personal protection, police service work, schutzhund or ring sports, returning the puppy is better than putting your plans on hold for up to 16 years until that dog dies of old age and you can get a new one.
