DO GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE PATIENTS WITH H. PYLORI INFECTION HAVE LESS SEVERE DISEASE THAN NON-INFECTED PATIENTS?
There is some evidence suggesting that H. pylori (Hp) plays a protective role in GERD. The aim of this ongoing study is to determine whether Hp infected GERD patients have less severe GERD than non-infected patients. METHODS: Consecutive consenting patients with a predominant symptom of heartburn filled out several validated questionnaires (Carlsson-Dent (CD), Spechlers Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease Activity Index, Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), Psychological General Well Being (PGWB)), and underwent 24 hr ambulatory pH monitoring as well as a C13 urea breath test. Endoscopic rating of esophagitis was recorded. RESULTS: To date, 61 patients (26% Hp positive) have been enrolled. The CD score (a GERD diagnostic score) was no different between the Hp positive and negative patients.
