Charlotte Dion: Yes, they can make grants to schools, as well. Governmental agencies are eligible to receive foundation grants. However, it is always a good idea to check with the funder because some foundations and corporations prefer not to fund government entities directly. For example, they might want to fund a nonprofit organization that had been set up by the agency rather than the agency itself. Looking at actual grants that have been made is a good way to find out if a funder supports individual schools. GC: There are several different types of foundations, such as company foundations, community foundations, and operating foundations. Can you clarify the difference between them?
