Do FLEXids occupy a COM port so that it cannot be used for anything else (such as a modem)? Which COM port the dongle is attached to?

Dongles are parallel devices. You should attach dongle to the Parallel port only. If the parallel port is occupied by the dongle, you can still connect another parallel device, such as printer, on top it (dongle).
