Do flashing lights, a siren and a police decal make a car or truck a police car ?
When people use the words “police car”, they are usually referring to a vehicle specially design and built to be used as a police car. It is called a Police Package vehicle, and is only available for sale to law enforcement, government agencies, and fire departments. These vehicles have many heavy duty components and are built stronger than standard vehicles. Some police departments, however, have used regular, retail cars as police vehicles. They buy a regular car right from a dealer, and then add emergency equipment, lights, siren, and decals. Departments have used cars such as the Dodge Intrepid(several departments), Mercury Grand Marquis, current model Ford Taurus(Washington DC), current model Ford Mustang (Kansas Highway Patrol), older model Pontiac Bonneville (Pittsburgh PA), and other models as marked patrol cars.
