Do filters affect the performance of the lens?

A UV (Ultra Violet) or Neutral Density filter does not affect light entering the lens and it is recommended that one is left on the lens at all times to protect the outer lens element from damage. Some other filters will affect light and compensation should be made for this. However, some SLR cameras will automatically compensate for this.
