Do filmmakers ever direct films straight out of film school?
I did the whole film school thing and the answer is very unlikely. You will have to ‘pay your dues’ for years before you even get to sit beside the director. I’ve worked for weeks on end working 18-20 hour days without very many breaks for less than 1300(take home) a month (non-union), (thats about $3-4 per hour). I’ve been treated like garbage by those who are ‘above the line’ who have developed monster egos on their climb to the top (this rarely changes). The truth is that there are so many aspiring directors out there that the competition is fierce and brutal. I’ve seen good friends sell each other out for a job but do so with a smile on their face just in case the other person could be a connection to another job in the future. You’ll have to commit yourself 100% on really stupid stuff like shampoo commercials, safeways ads and bad movies of the week.. I sacrified so much of my life on stuff like that and for what? To have my name on a film that could be channel surfed away in a mo
