Do Fewer Imports Mean Retailers Will Suffer This Christmas? Wednesday October 14, 2009 The latest analysis from Panjiva, the leading source of objective information on global suppliers, shows a surprising trend. Today’s published figures from Panjiva show that from August to September, there was a five percent decline in the number of manufacturers shipping to the US. With retailers gearing up for the holiday season does this decline in imports, mean that another tough time is expected? The August to September decline is a mirror of what happened last year. In the corresponding period, the decline in 2008 was seven percent. Last year was not great for retailers with total holiday sales down eight percent on 2007, but some sectors were hit harder with luxury retailers down 34.5 percent and electronics purchases down 26.7 percent.
