Do ferrets and hamsters get along?
Absolutely not. I am sure there are exceptions, as there are to every rule, but for the most part NO. Ferrets are hunters much in the same way that cats and especially kittens are…if they see something scurry, and especially if something squeaks, their instincts are to catch it and play with it and shake it. When I had pet rats, I always kept them separated from my ferrets. Female ferrets are more likely to shake a small animal to death while trying to play with it. Male ferrets are slower but still would not be good to have around any type of hamster, or rat or gerbil. Ferrets are carnivores and their instincts are to hunt. While a domesticated ferret would probably not recognize the hamster as food, it would think of it as a toy. A good rule to follow: if it’s a situation you wouldn’t trust a kitten in, don’t leave it to chance with a ferret.
