Do facial injuries need urgent attention?
All facial injuries need to be promptly examined by experienced doctors to make sure there is no immediate threat to the airway, vision or brain. Jaw fractures involving teeth are best surgically managed within 3 days of presentation to prevent infection. Fractures to the jaw joint (TMJ), cheek bone, nose and eye socket are often left for 5-7 days for the swelling to subside before a final assessment is made as to whether surgery is required.
