Do employees have to be paid extra for working weekends, nights, or holidays?
Generally, no. Nonexempt employees must be paid the overtime rate only for each hour actually worked in excess of 40 hours during a workweek. Thus, employers are not required to pay the overtime rate for work performed on a holiday, weekend, or evening, as long as the employee’s total hours worked in that workweek are less than 40.
