Do different ways of giving birth affect development?
I don’t think there is anything concrete to suggest different methods of giving birth have different effects on the child. Obviously a traumatic and mismanaged birth could be potentially tragic for both mother and child. Natural childbirth where possible is always going to be better for the baby than being yanked out in a caesaran as the human body is designed to give birth and to go through delivery – the action of the baby being squeezed through the birth canal clears the baby’s lungs of amniotic fluid and helpes them start to breathe more quickly. The hormones produced in labour help with the baby’s feeding reflex, help mother and baby bond, etc which could have a lasting effect on the child. But obviously nature does need a helping hand occasionally and in an emergency situation a C section is sometimes the only option.
