Do Dalits have political power in a democratic India?
Through the weight of sheer numbers, one might suppose that in democratic India, Dalits would wield political power to effect real change. Sadly, in most respects this is not the case: Dalits are frequently disenfranchised and even when organised they represent at best a fragmented political force. A Dalit, K R Narayanan, was elected President in 1997.
