I think Dachshunds make GREAT pets! Due to their short stature, and long bodies they are Prone to back problems, but a well bred and cared for dachshund is HIGHLY unlikely to develop any type of back problems in their life. They are strong, loving, cute, and crazy dogs with big personality and even bigger hearts. They are smart, and willful, but I personally find that endearing in them. We have had 2 dachshunds in the past, and my aunt has 6 ranging from 4 mos, to 12. and only one has had back problems, and that in the one that was rescued, and had been abused previously. The Adult dachshund my parents own now, is able to to light hikes, and LOVES to spend time in the woods. As long as you take ALL necessary precautions and care for their back properly this should never be a problem.
