Do compost toilets smell?
Not necessarily When built and designed well and used and maintained with good education, the compost toilet does not give any bad odours and can be placed almost anywhere, including inside houses. Whether (and if, how much) it smells really depends on the type of system you choose, and then how well you manage it, you need to make sure that everyone who uses it understands how to use it. Some designs are more inclined to be smelly than others. Bear in mind that you will need a good supply of carbon rich material to cover the waste – and this is one of the things which can make the difference between smell or no smell. If you are going to build it yourself rather that buy, two chamber systems are worth the extra effort, as the waste is fully decomposed and like compost by the time the chamber needs to be emptied.
