DO COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES REQUIRE FURTHER WORLD LANGUAGE STUDY IN ORDER TO EARN A DEGREE?
This is difficult to answer because of the vast number of colleges and universities and because of the variety of requirements. We recommend using the University of Washington requirements as a guideline: the UW definitely WANTS at least three years of a second language study from its applicants. Beyond that, to verify the need for more study in other languages, all majors in the UW s College of Arts and Sciences (which encompasses many departments) now require that the student pass a language proficiency exam as a requirement for a degree. Accordingly, most of our UW -bound students prepare themselves with at least three years of language study. Clearly, whether a student will HAVE TO study a world language beyond high school will depend on where he attends college and on what his particular area of interest will be. It is not uncommon to find college world language requirements for majors such as Business, Political Science, and International Studies, for example.
