Do college sororities and fraternities cause more harm or good on campus?
I studied in the USA for one semester. Whilst there, I made some fantastic friends, traveled widely, studied hard, and had a great time and a very valuable experience. I also got to witness the ritual of ‘pledging’ – a form of torture and humiliation that is used to brainwash and segregate people. The pledging was, obviously, secret. But my closest friend could not stand it, and told me a few of the terrible things they had done. This was for one of the big-name fraternities, the kind that have chapters all across the state, and whose promotional literature boasted of presidents, astronauts, and millionaires. Enforced and pressured drinking was just the start. Everything they did was a tactic designed to separate my friend from the people who truly loved him, and make him loyal to people who were homophobic and utterly indifferent to him.
