Do coi fish need air pump?
Oxygen in the form of pumped air is vital to all aqua creatures. Aquatic creatures, such as Koi, are not given the luxury of an abundance of oxygen in their habitats as we humans are. Koi can only obtain oxygen from the water in which they live which means that the oxygen has to be dissolved in order for them to be able to extract it. Water however, does not dissolve a high concentration of oxygen. It typically reaches saturation at much lower levels that we’re used – air contains about 21% oxygen (210 ml/l) which is a lot more than we need. Water on the other hand has much lower concentrations of approximately 10.2 mg/l at 10C. The problem that concerns Koi keepers is that as the water temperature increases, the amount of dissolved oxygen that the water is able to hold decreases. But as water temperature increases, so does the Koi’s need for oxygen. In summer, when the water is particularly warm it is vital to ensure that the Koi pond is as close to saturation levels with dissolved ox
