At present, CofE schools are subject to the same requirements as other schools: governors take the decision on the specific nature of a sex education programme, but all schools must follow the sex education component of the science curriculum. We were grateful of the opportunity for representation on the review group which considered this important area of the curriculum (during 2008), and we welcome the decision to make Sex and Relationship Education a statutory part of the wider curriculum (announced October 2008). Church of England schools aim to develop in all students the knowledge and capacity to make informed choices about their personal lives. Whatever the specific content of the syllabus, church schools will continue to place sex education within the framework of a Christian understanding of sex and human relationships, which stresses the importance of a faithful marriage as the best framework for sex.
