West Point (and the other Service Academies) have a standard dual track admissions process for everyone. If the candidate is a recruited athlete then there is a third track that is followed. Now for the details. Every candidate must apply to the Academy for Admission (first track). This track involves completing and submitting the candidate questionnaire; securing school counselor and teacher recommendations, and writing the personal essay. The Academy then processes all of that information and generates a ranking score for each candidate. Every candidate must also apply for a Congressional nomination (second track) to their Congressman and/or Senator and/or the Vice President, and for those who have a career military parent they may also apply for a Presidential Nomination.
