Do Christians believe in metaphors?
Yes, and there never was an Adam and Eve or tree of knowledge either. The story of the Adamic Fall is just an ancient metaphor to describe humankind’s inherently evil nature badly in need of salvation and restoration. And the book of Job is a metaphor to describe humans’ individual puny views of themselves in relation to their God, the world and the universe. Metaphors, metaphors, metaphors…
Some Christians do accept that much of the Bible is metaphor..normally those at the more liberal/scholarly end, although my early education was from Jesuit priests and they tended to be more rational and logical surrounding the Bible than believing it was all literal. Fundamentalists believe that the Bible is literal truth, so they refuse to see that it could have metaphor. I agree with you…actually, the whole celebration of Christmas on Dec.25 was done to accomodate the Pagan celebration of Yule on Dec.21, not to mention that the Greek God Mithras was born on the 25th of December according to Pagan legend, in a cave, to a Virgin Mother, and that legend existed long before Christianity…hmmm…
