Do chiropractors believe in medicine and surgery?
Yes, we do. As Chiropractors, we don t utilize drugs or surgery in our scope of practice; however, we acknowledge that there are times when drugs and or surgery are the best course of action for that individual patient. Our philosophy is chiropractic first, drugs second, and surgery last. If you do have a subluxation, there is no other course of care that will correct the problem. Chiropractic care is the least invasive and safest of the three and has no dangerous side effects. When your body has symptoms it is telling you something needs to be changed so the symptoms don t continually reappear. (Please see “What About Symptoms” in our Articles section). There are patients we refer to surgeons for spinal conditions; however, they are a small minority (under 5%).
Certainly, as Norman Cousins says: “There are times when intervention in the form of medicine or surgery is absolutely necessary but there is never a time when the nourishment one puts into one’s body or one’s mind is not essential to health.”1 Chiropractors would add spinal care to Mr. Cousins’ observation.
Definitely. If I have a medical emergency, such as a broken bone, I will definitely be seeing my medical doctor. Every health-care practitioner has a role to play. However, one particular type cannot play all roles. Chiropractors have established their role in the treatment of nerve, muscle, and joint injuries. In our office, we not only identify and treat the patient’s problem, but we also promote the prevention of the problem from returning.
