Do Chinese teenagers in America, (who came from China, not born in America) speak Mandarin or Cantonese?
While there are hundreds of dialect in Mainland China, the Common Language (普通话 pǔ tōng huà)is Mandarin. And while people from Hong Kong normally speaks Cantonese, they are actively learning Mandarin. Since the merge in 1997, u can see their effort paid off in more accurate pronounciations and sentence structure. Most possibly, they speak their native tongue in their group if they are from the same state/province, if not, the highest possibility is Mandarin. If not even that, it may come as a surprise to some, but it could also be English that they use…. My sister once had problem communicating to an Indian (new worker) and asked another Indian staff (older employee) to translate. The 2 Indians end up speaking English as they can’t understand each other’s mother tongue as they are from different state. It shocked my sister as she thought since they r from the same country they have to speak the same language. She has no idea that in India, they too have more the hundred dialect spoke
