Do children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have SPD?
We studied 40 children with ASD and found that two types of responses occurred physiologically. One set of children had hyper-reactive reactions to sensory input across all sensory domains tested and the other set had low to normal reactions. This suggests that some but not all children with ASD have SPD . Can we get SPD included in standard diagnostic manuals and what are the standard definitions of SPD and its subtypes? We worked with the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders (ICDL) and the Diagnostic Classification: Zero to Three (DC: 0-3). In both we were able to influence inclusion of SPD and its subtypes in both revised diagnostic manuals (2005). In addition, we have been working with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) – V committee to suggest inclusion of SPD in the revision of DSM (2012).
