Do cats drink dirty or clean water?
I have seen my cats drinking out of a dripping water faucet, out of the bottom of the tub where I’ve just had a shower, out of the toilet, out of a crystal bowl with floating candles in it, out of puddles, and out of their water dish. When I wash their water dish and refill it, they often come running and drink out of it. I think that their brains are wired to recognize “drinkable water” in many situations that we would not necessarily think of as ideal. After all, they developed as a desert species, where springs and rivers might often be just a small trickle into a muddy basin. But it is best to provide a clean, fresh source of water for your cats. Washing it daily is what I would recommend, and refilling it at least once a day, depending on the climate – when we lived in Arizona it was a much bigger challenge than it is now that we live in Minnesota.
