Do Canadians have an inferiority complex toward the US?
It is mostly as the US outnumbers Canadians about 10:1, and we are completely subsumed in American culture. Books, movies, tv, and so on. Sometimes, it can be difficult to even BE Canadian with all of that. Which is a pity, as Canadian stuff is just fine. The culture difference: This is pretty subtle, but real. I saw a paper once that suggested one of the underlying reasons was religion. The US was founded (in part) by people freeing oppression in Europe. Some of this was religion, as people wanted to get away from the rules of “organized” religion, and wanted the freedom to do their own thing. Canada, OTOH, was formed by people more loyal in the first place, and either Roman Catholic (for Quebec, but some other areas as well), or Anglican, which is so close to Roman Catholic, the differences can be hard to find. So, you had the mainline “High Church” in Canada, and the breakaway new Protestant ones in the USA. This difference influenced culture, and the differences remain with us toda
