Do brook trout cross with brown trout?
The cross between a female brown trout and a male brook trout is called a tiger trout. Most tiger trout are produced in a hatchery situation. Tiger trout are rare in the wild, probably because brook trout and brown trout belong to a separate genus. Brook trout belong to the genus Salvelinus; Salmo for brown trout. The tiger trout is also sterile. The only Wyoming water with tiger trout is High Savery Reservoir, located about 35 miles south of Rawlins. They were chosen for High Savery because they are sterile, so there numbers can be strictly controlled through stocking. They also prey on chubs and suckers and readily cooperate with anglers.
