There is a difference in the emergency care capabilities between Mills Health Center in San Mateo and Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame. Peninsula is a full-service emergency room capable of handling major medical problems such as heart attack, stroke or serious injury. Mills Health Center operates what is known as a “Standby Emergency Room.” It is designed to care for minor emergencies and urgent care needs. Most important, if you believe you are experiencing a life threatening emergency, never try to drive yourself. Call 911.
