Do bagless vacuums work as well as vacuums with bags?

I have owned the regular vacuums all my life with a bag. What I worry about isn`t the big stuff but rather the little particles basically flying right through the bagless vacuum and being ejected into the room. Thus I would be creating a ton of dust from particulate matter in the carpets. Anyone who has tried this and understands what I mean please give me your experiences and opinion on whether or not I should buy a bagless vaccum.
