“Revolutionary New York” Utilizing the collections and surrounding environment of the South Street Seaport Museum and the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Revolutionary New York module examines the social, cultural, and political history of Colonial America through the lens of 18th-century European and American portraiture. Both at the museums and in social studies class students study colonial society, politics and culture. By examining SSSM’s “NY Unearthed” as well as the museums’ collections of colonial era paintings, objects, and houses, students will become experts not only on the events and ideas of the era but also on the way people lived. Students will then construct the biography of a historical fictional colonial-era American, and, using the conventions of 18th-century portraiture, execute a portrait of their fictional Colonial American.
