Do artists get royalties when their song is played at a professional sporting event?

I do not believe that artists receive any royalties for stadium playtime. I know that they do not get royalties for when music is played on TV, Radio, or in restaurants or bars. The idea being that they are going to sell more CD’s because of the exposure. I believe that they get royalties when songs are played through subscription services (i-tunes, satellite radio, etc) because people are paying money specifically for that song. If the song is used as a major element, i believe that they will reach some agreement with the artist which may be financial or it may just be an agreement to make sure that the artist is known, etc. Hope that helps.
