Because of the conjunctival swelling and increased tear flow caused by eye allergy the symptoms of dry eye may occur as the tear film is no longer stable. Artificial tears help to compensate for this deficit. Furthermore they rinse out allergens that may have got into the eye (e.g. flower pollen). In milder cases of eye allergy they can be the agent of choice.
