Do any stations have a voting system or committee process for picking what gets on the air, or does it really just boil down to the music director and program director?
Generally it’s not voting. It’s also more than just our ears. There are a lot of factors that go into whether or not we play something. I think one of the reasons KROQ (the nation’s leading Alternative station ed.) is so successful is because Kevin [Weatherly, KROQ PD] has kids on staff who are in the [target] demo[graphic] who he can rely on to give him an idea of what his audience would like. That’s why you see these records that you’ve never heard of, like The Offspring.
