Do Ancient Treasures Belong to Egypt?
Archaeologist Zahi Hawass, head of Egypt’s antiquities department, is on a mission to reclaim Egypt’s treasures. Hawass believes that priceless artifacts have been stolen from Egypt. He has a long list of objects that he wants returned, including the Rosetta stone and a bust of Queen Nefertiti. The sculpture is in the Neues Museum, in Berlin, Germany. Hawass believes that the bust was “smuggled out of Egypt.” The museum maintains that it acquired the bust legally. Hawass insists that museums must return any stolen objects to their countries of origin.
