Do Americans think Australia is just desert and there are kangaroos everywhere and that we speak weird?
No, that’s absurd! But I do believe all Australians act like Yahoo Serious and Crocodile Dundee. J/K. But seriously, people always have a skewed idea of what a country is like if they’ve never been there and it’s depicted in a one-dimensional way in the media. Americans get put down for it a lot, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people (usually Europeans) on here asking if American girls are really like the ones in the American Pie movies. Most Americans probably do think Australia is a bit more “wild” than it really is when they’re little, b/c that’s how it’s depicted in a lot of TV and movies, but we grow out of it when we grow up and experience more than what we see in cartoons.
Most Americans know about Australia from geography class in school, but the most significant impressions Americans tend to get about your country are from TV and the cinema – “Crocodile Dundee” and “Crocodile Hunter” come to mind. I have never seen the Simpsons episode you mention but that > could < contribute to the impression. Realize that most of what you know or think you know about the USA also comes from TV and the cinema.
Bud, you’re an idiot. I’m from Queensland, just north of brissy and I say mate and G’day all the time. The blokes in ACDC are actually a combo of English and Scottish, and we do eat shrimp, but in Aus we call them prawns. Also, I see kangaroos a fair bit, obviously not in the city but to say ‘the only place a normal Australian would see a kangaroo is in a zoo’ is ridiculous just head 30 minutes from any of the capital cities and you will be able to find kangaroos. My point is, don’t try to prove things to other parts of the world, stop trying to Americanize yourself and our great nation and stop trying to pretend that our country is commercial as the UK or US and be thankful that it isn’t!
