It’s not a Western thing, although many students do end up paying for their education simply because the parents can’t afford it. This is especially true in the US, where the cost of tuition is so high. I was fortunate that my parents were able to afford my undergraduate education (they did so using a special type of bond called a “zero coupon”, but that’s another story). They also paid for my housing, and gave me pocket money every month. Now that I’m a graduate student, the university has offered to pay my full tuition up until my PhD, and even provide me with a stipend that will pay for my housing and food.
