Do all states have caucuses in addition to primary elections?
Montana is the only state to have both, I believe the Democratic Party is holding a caucus and the Republican Party is holding a primary (but I’m not sure which is holding which). All other states have one or the other. When the state holds a primary the voters go to a polling place and cast a vote just like in any other election. In the states that hold a caucus, voters go to a “convention” to place their vote. In a republican caucus, voters place secret votes on ballets and they are done. In a democratic caucus, voters are counted, then they go to a corner of the room they are in that represents the candidate of their choice. (This is only the first round). If some of the candidates do not have a minimum of 15% of the voters in that precinct, they are non-viable and those who vote for them can switch their vote to another candidate who has at least 15%. Of the candidates who do have 15%, they send one person to try and convince those who voted for non-viable candidates to switch thei
