Do all occupations and employers want the same skills?
Most graduate jobs require many of the top twenty’ skills but the importance attached to a particular skill varies. Many large companies have their own detailed descriptions based on the attributes of their most successful staff and some graduate jobs also require specialist or technical skills. Skills may also be applied differently in different occupations. For example social workers, solicitors, advertising executives and IT analysts all use communication skills but the context, purpose and particular aspects of communication used are different. As a graduate you need to adapt your skills to new contexts. For an overview of skills needed in particular occupations, look at the Occupational Profiles on the Prospects website. This can really help you with applications.
