Do all female elves have an evenstar necklace or is it just arwen?
It’s easy to get a bit confused here, as Tolkien loves starlight imagery when talking about all elves as they appear in LOTR, and especially Arwen. When the hobbits first meet elves in the chapter ‘Three is Company’ at the start of their journey, Tolkien describes how – ‘… the hobbits could see the starlight glimmering on their hair and in their eyes.’ ‘Evenstar’ is a cultural nickname if you like, as it is the Westron translation of Arwen’s ‘second’ name, Undomiel, which means ‘evening maiden’. This was a name given to her as she was the most beautiful elven lady in the fading years of the Eldar in Middle Earth (the Third Age). There are some excerpts which are a bit more concrete re wearing gems – in the chapter ‘Many Meetings’, Frodo gets his first glimpse of Arwen, and – ‘Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white; but her soft grey raiment had no ornament save a girdle of leaves wrought in silver.’ And in ‘The Tale of A
