Do all Dolby Digital programs have 5.1 channels?
Not all Dolby Digital programs have 5.1 channels. While Dolby Digital was developed from the outset to handle multichannel audio, it is a form of digital audio coding that can be used to convey mono and stereo soundtracks as well. Digital television and cable transmissions, for example, often carry Dolby Digital stereo soundtracks, although the number of 5.1 channel programs are increasing. Movies in cinemas and on DVDs, on the other hand, very often do have 5.1-channel Dolby Digital soundtracks.
