I am an American with two children in the Chinese national school system, first and third grades. I teach master and PhD students in a Chinese university. Here are my observances: Both my children have only been in the Chinese schools. They have never gone to school in the US. They do a lot of memorization and they have tons of homework every night. They do not participate in after school activities because they are seldom offered. Dance and drawing are common “extra” classes on weekends, as is English. However, there are very few sports programs for boys. Martial arts (wushu, tae kwon do, gongfu) are offered on a limited basis, but most children are expected to study. One of my first grader’s friends can’t play unless everything is completed because “you’re in first grade now — you have to think about university.” My third grader is required to do her math homework in ink.
