Do all central vacuums use the same motors? What are the main differences in brands?
When comparing central vacuum systems there are a few major areas to scrutinize. First off, almost all US/Canadian made central vacuums use Ametek/Lamb motors (Electrolux uses their own). Most also use “by-pass” motors instead of “thru-flow” styling. (No major organization in the USA has produced any consumer reports on them and your best resource will be taking time to visit with actual dealers and users.) Since most central vacuums use Ametek Lamb motors, it is easy to compare their performance. Electrolux makes their own motors and only really offer one unit. It has a single 5.7″ 3 -stage motor in it and has almost identical stats to the Ametek 116765 motor used in MD’s M45 and the Beam 199. Beam also now uses this motor in a few of its models including Frigidaire. Also find out the speed the motor will operate at. Higher speed motors may not last as long. If a motor is spinning twice as fast as another motor, then the carbon brushes are getting twice the amount of friction exposure
